In January 2021 we took a trip to the Coromandel which is a 2 1/2 hour drive south of Auckland. You can also take 2 hour ferry ride.
We went to Hot Water Beach for 3 days and stayed in the Top 10 Campground in a cabin. Hot Water Beach has geothermal pools and at low tide you dig a hole in the sand to create hot pool.

The place where you can dig is only a small area of the beach and gets crowded at low tide with everyone digging
You have to be careful as the water can be boiling hot so need to mix it with the ocean water
The weather was not that hot but the sun was super strong as it is all over NZ
